40 years of Lapworth RDA Group
1968-1983 riding at Darley Mill School of Equitation, Chapel Lane, Lapworth on Tuesday afternoons in term time courtesy of Miss Daphne Gilbert.
Riders came from Tudor Grange Special School Solihull and its pupils later transferred to Swanswell School Solihull.
Riders aged from 6 to 16 and were physically disabled. 6 to 8 would ride at one time out of a total of 10 to 16.
1976 the first of 10 residential holidays was organised specifically for riders with severe learning disabilities at the home of Mrs Chris Jones.
Lapworth riders subsequently took part in them and also enjoyed National holidays.
1981 was International Year of the Disabled with 14-20th June designated a Special Activity week. Parents and friends were invited to watch a lesson in progress on 16th June.
1984 riding at the Children's Stables, Fern Hill Lane, Fen End courtesy of Mrs Julie Curlings. Riders came Swanswell School. Riding also took place at the home of Mrs Chris Jones.
1984-1999 located at Solihull Riding Club. Riders came at first from Swanswell School and later from Reynolds Cross, Langley School, St George and St Theresa (Dorridge), Ulverley Green School, St Peter's School, Bentley Heath School and finally Hazeloak Special School.
SRC very generously allowed the group to use the ourdoor covered arena and surrounding land for free. Helpers either rode or boxed their ponies to the venue.
1988 Paul Taylor rode Magic in a short demostration at Ulverley Green School. The Head, Mr Moore, said the Group had been chosen as Middle School Charity of the year.
HRH the Princess Royal at the Groups 21st birthday celebration
1989 On 11th May, in the presence of HRH the Princess Royal, the Group celebrated its 21st birthday in the form of a picnic ride with Stratford Group (also 21) and the Centre of Endland Group (25) at Solihull Riding Club.
Following the Blue Peter Rags Appeal, Miffy received a New Zealand Rug from the funds.
Lowlands Farm
1999-2008 riding at Lowlands Farm, Shrewley courtsey of Mrs Ro Pudden with riders coming from Springfield House School for children with educational, emotional and behavioural difficulties.
Riding switched to Wednesday afternoons. There are between 6 and 9 riding at any one time. Those not riding learn stable management instead.
